Want to feel happier? Do something nice for someone else.
Giving to others releases endorphins that activate the parts of our brains associated with trust, pleasure and social connection.
Spending money or doing something for others leads to higher levels of happiness, and increases the chance that we’ll be generous in the future. Plus, when others see us being kind, they also get a hit of endorphins and are more likely to then go and do something kinds themselves. This creates a positive feedback loop of generosity and happiness.
Kindness also contributes to good social relationships and therefore kind people experience more happiness and have happier memories. The experience of positive emotions and increased social interactions creates an upward spiral of well-being.
