Want to be successful? Here are the do’s and don’ts.

  1. Don’t waste your time comparing yourself to others.

You’re not competing with anyone but yourself.  Firstly, it’s pointless because it offers no benefit.

Secondly, you don’t know anything about people’s life or what goes on under the surface of what you see at work or on social media.

  1. Don’t waste your time feeling sorry for yourself or making excuses.

Yes, there are people that have more but there are plenty of people with less.  Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.  Then grow from there – one little step at a time.

  1. Don’t put things off.

The quicker you do the hard stuff or the thing you’re avoiding, the more energy and time you’ll have for the things you love.

  1. Don’t waste time and energy on things you can’t control.

You have control over what you put out into the world, your behaviour, your actions, your mindset (including your response to things, your attitude, the meaning you attach to things) – that’s about it.

  1. Don’t avoid the hard and scary things.

Find a way to slowly and steadily stretch your capacity to get comfortable with change or dealing with things that are hard or scary.  If you do it in tiny manageable steps, it won’t seem so scary and before you know it, you’ll be doing that thing you thought you couldn’t do!  Build your courage muscle!

  1. Don’t give others the power.

You decide what power you give the words of others.  If it ain’t helping you, don’t let it get to you.

  1. Don’t get all up in your head about what others think of you.

If you’re being the best possible version of yourself and doing your best work, then screw the haters.  Someone, somewhere will always think you are too tall, too short, too fat, too skinny, too fashionable, not fashionable enough, too smart, too dumb… the list could go on.

As Dita Von Teese said, you can be the ripest, juiciest peach in the world, and there's still going to be somebody who hates peaches”.

  1. Address problems early. Letting anything fester always makes it worse.

Problems left undealt with get bigger and uglier.  Go early, go hard.

  1. Push through set-backs.

Every failure is a chance to improve, do things differently, find a better approach.  If you give up every time you experience a set-back you won’t get anywhere near as far as you could.

  1. Have faith in yourself and what you’re capable of.

Don’t wait for others to tell you how good you are.  That’s not their job.  You’re an adult.  Know your worth and get on with it.
