Want to actually achieve your goals? Here are 5 Steps That Will Get You Where You Want to Be
Step 1: Get clear: What do you want to achieve and by when? Why you want it?
This can be in any area of your life:
- Career
- Contribution
- Educational
- Family
- Finance
- Health (mental and physical).
- Love
- Recreation
- Self-image
- Social
- Spirituality
Only focus on one or two ultimate goals or you won’t have the time or energy to achieve them. Then write it down! You’re about 50% more likely to achieve your goal if it is written down.
Once you know what you want to achieve, you need to understand why you want it. Being connected to your goal will keep you motivated to stick with it through the boring bits and the set-backs.
Step 2: Consider the required effort and sacrifice and be aware of the pitfalls.
Depending on the goal there may be trade-offs required to achieve it. Get clear on what you might have to sacrifice to achieve this goal. Then ask yourself, is it worth it?
If the goal isn’t worth what you have to give or give up to achieve it, it might be worth rethinking what you really want.
Then consider where set-backs might happen. Being aware of where things might get de-railed will help you keep pushing through when the set-backs happen (it might even help you avoid some of them).
Step 3: Break your goal into sub-goals and the sub-goals into micro goals.
When you break your big goal down in to sub-goals, you can see exactly what needs to be done each month to achieve your goal.
From there, set a micro-goal (bite sized actions) for each week of the month.
By following this strategy, you won’t be intimidated into inaction. You’ll make consistent progress that will compound into achieving your ultimate goal.
Step 4: Set yourself up for success.
Create habits that will support you in achieving your ultimate goal.
It’s the little things we do consistently that have the biggest impact overall, so set yourself up for success by ditching bad habits that get you where you want to be.
Step 5: Review your progress.
At the end of each month review what you’ve achieved and update the sub goals and micro goals for the coming month.
If you want to achieve your goals, you have to follow a system or structure that supports success. So, if you’re the type of person that likes structure (or someone who hates it but needs it) we have a set of planning pads (which include one for goal setting, a weekly planner and a habit tracker) are specifically designed to make it easy for you to define your goals and make them happen.
