Good news everyone – you’re 40% in control of your happiness!

Good news everyone – you’re 40% in control of your happiness!

Now I know that might not sound great but the way I see it, 40% is still pretty good all things considering.

Here’s the break-down:

  • 50% of your happiness is determined by genetic pre-disposition (sorry, what you got, you got)
  • 10% of your happiness is situational (at least you have a bit of a chance with this one)
  • 40% of your happiness is determined by your happiness practices (completely in your control)

So how can you make the most of your 40%?

Make happiness practices part of your daily routines!

What the hell are happiness practices?

Well, they are different for everyone but here are some examples:

Choose kindness

Bring a little joy to someone else’s life.  Kindness creates kindness, it’s contagious and one kind act leads to another, creating a ripple effect that can have a positive impact on many people.

Be curious

Don’t jump to judgment, take a bit of time to understand, to wonder, ask questions.

Exercise patience

It’s becoming increasingly difficult in our fast-paced world but cultivate patience.  It will get you where you want to go with a lot more joy and peace along the way.

Be generous (and it’s not just a money thing)

Be generous with your time, with your care, with your gratitude.  The more we ‘invest’ in others, the happier we are.

Add a little calm to your day

Sprinkle opportunities for calm throughout the day to help you keep your battery charged and your mental peace in check.

Nurture your mindset

Be picky about what information you let into your mind and what you take on.  Like your body, you have to feed it good things for it to function optimally.

Have a daily gratitude practice

The science says you can literally train your brain to be happy and optimistic if you jot down three things you are grateful for each day.  Take the time to stop, notice and be grateful for what you have – it’s pocket dynamo for happiness.
