8 Ways to connect with your Kids

Daily life is busy. There are constant demands from work, life, and the world around us. It is challenging to slow down, be in the moment and connect with our kids.

So, here are some ideas that can help you maintain a strong bond with your kids.  It really doesn’t matter how old they are or if you feel like you’re starting from scratch.  Just pick a few things that would fit in with your family’s routine.

  1. Make a date. Set a weekly date with each child, so you are ensured some alone time with them.
  2. Read with them. I’m a big fan of this. Read to them every day if possible. It’s great quality time and a chance for amazing cuddles and if they’re older, grab a book of your own and sit next to each other under a blanket and read together.
  3. Talk to them. When everyone has regrouped after their day at school and work, instead of sitting down and watching TV, take the extra effort to sit down and talk with your kids about their day.  You can also talk to them in the car. As kids get older, sometimes the only opportunity to talk to them is in the car so take advantage of it.
  4. Play “High, Low, Grateful”.  If you’re lucky enough to be able to sit down altogether for dinner, take the opportunity to hear about the highs and lows of their day and something they are grateful for.
  5. Work on a goal together. Find something you’d both like to do and work towards it together.  There will likely be different goals with each child.
  6. Play with them. Don’t be afraid to be a kid with them. Play video games, watch cartoons, play board games, have pillow fights, make a fort, play superheroes.  Or if they’re older, exercise together.  Find something you both like to do and get moving.
  7. Have a Family Day. Make every Sunday just for your family.  Plan out what you’re going to do, and do really fun things with the kids.
  8. Just snuggle. Every now and then, just pull your child to you and hug them. Snuggle, be affectionate, squeeze them tight, while they’ll still let you.
